    Eyxomai EyxΩ9Bh and EyxoΣ in Homer.A. W. H. Adkins - 1969 - Classical Quarterly 19 (01):20-.
This paper will discuss the behaviour of and in the Homeric poems. These words are allotted a variety of different ‘meanings’ by the lexicographers. For example, LSJ s.v. I. pray, II. vow, III. profess loudly, boast, vaunt; s.v. I. prayer, II. boast, vaunt, or object of boasting, glory; s.v. I. thing prayed for, object of prayer, II. boast, vaunt. I shall, of course, discuss the whole range of these words; but I begin with some observations on ‘prayer’. It may appear (...)

The chemical work of Horace Bénédict de Saussure (1740–1799), with the text of a letter written to him by madame Lavoisier.W. A. Smeaton - 1978 - Annals of Science 35 (1):1-16.
In 1768 H. B. de Saussure studied chemistry with Baumé in Paris, and subsequently, using precise quantitative methods, he analysed minerals collected during his alpine journeys. He began to use the blowpipe in 1784, and later adapted it so that with a microscope and micrometer he could examine the effects of high temperatures on minute specimens of minerals. Analyses of air carried out with a portable eudiometer convinced him that air from alpine valleys contained more oxygen, and was therefore healthier, (...)

    Merit, Responsibility, and Thucydides.A. W. H. Adkins - 1975 - Classical Quarterly 25 (02):209-.
Since other readers of Mr. Creed's recent interesting article may find themselves in a similar puzzlement to my own over certain statements there made, I offer this reply in the hope of providing elucidation. It is clear that someone named Adkins has perpetrated something heinous; but that ‘someone’ manifestly holds views which differ in a number of important respects from my own. The most convenient method of demonstrating this fact would be to juxtapose passages of Creed with passages of my (...)

    Problemy i kierunki rozwoju współczesnej etyki radzieckiej.W. G. Iwanow, W. P. Koblakow & A. G. Charczew - 1970 - Etyka 7:7-38.
The sixth decade of this century may be considered a period of dynamic development of the Soviet ethics. In contrast with the post-revolutionary period, the ethics does not limit itself to a normative reflection, but starts also extensive studies in the theory of ethics. According to the authors of the present article, there are all reasons to believe that the marxist ethics will become a scientific discipline in a full sense of the word. The purpose of the article is not (...)

This is a commentary on an article from "dialogue", march 1972: "first philosophy: metaphysics or epistemology?" by kenneth dorter. epistemologies from the time of descartes which have largely replaced ontology emphasize the human conditions for knowing, and where an ontology is lacking supply a knowledge by description with no objective world to describe. the humanism which refuses to go beyond mankind to learn about man elects to follow a path to extinction, and insofar as we hold to an egocentric viewpoint (...)

    Aristotle's ethics.A. W. Price - 1985 - Journal of Medical Ethics 11 (3):150-152.
How are we to understand Aristotle's famous doctrine of the mean? "If ten pounds are too much for a particular person to eat and two too little, it does not follow that the trainer will order six pounds"... In fact, the relation of morality to physical health is more intimate than mere analogy. Emotions involve a bodily process (cp On the Soul 403al6ff): for example, 'Anger is productive of heat' (On the Parts ofAnimals 650b35), while 'Fear is, indeed, a kind (...)

Cicero on Praetors who Failed to Abide by Their Edicts.A. W. Lintott - 1977 - Classical Quarterly 27 (01):184-.
Cicero, after a discussion of the value of Cornelius' bill about privilegia, is clearly here dealing with the bill, ‘ut praetores ex edictis suis perpetuis ius dicerent’ . The pluperfect subjunctives suggest that he is arguing that notorious unjust judgements of previous years would not have happened, if Cornelius' bill had been then in force. Cicero, after a discussion of the value of Cornelius' bill about privilegia,' is clearly here dealing with the bill, ‘ut praetores ex edictis suis perpetuis ius (...)

The interpretation of in this context raises some nice problems. It is a term, a very flattering one, which had been appropriated to themselves by a certain class, in many cities at least, and by Dorians in relation to ‘Ionians and islanders’; it had thus become a cant phrase in current usage, the kind of phrase which when used tauntingly, as here, or ironically should be given inverted commas.
